Genre #1

Genre #2

Process Report

The handle that I used throughout my campaign is “perfectbeingyou.” My message that is spread by my genres is to love yourself, accept yourself for you are, and to not compare yourself to others and not overanalyze your flaws. The overall theme is body positivity and supporting self-confidence. My genres were a Tumblr page, an Instagram account, and an infographic. I used these genres because I wanted to reach an audience of young women and most young people in today’s society utilize social media. An infographic was also ideal because it is easy to spread on sites such as Twitter and Tumblr. Young people pay attention to mostly visual media so an Instagram and Tumblr were perfect ways to get photos that express my message out. I used many quotes and photos of celebrities because a lot of young women pay attention to and sometimes idealize the lives of celebrities and listen to what they have to say. Using celebrities that are body-activists also appealed to ethos because people are usually more likely to listen to someone who they know is outspoken in the community

Genre #3

and is well-respected. I also appealed to pathos throughout the Tumblr and Instagram accounts as the captions and photos are meant to make women feel love and happiness. I didn’t have to use that many programs or tools to make these genres since social media accounts are pretty self-explanatory but I used Canva.com to make my infographic and also to make different graphics that were posted to my accounts.

I used my infographic to list some body-positive and confidence-boosting Instagram accounts to consider following and gave little descriptions of each. I made the graphic very crisp and clear so it is easy to read with a blue background and simple black and white text. I also added clip art photos next to each account to make it cuter and bring attention to it. My audience for this graphic was mainly young women and teenagers and I know girls are more likely to look at something if it is attractive and aesthetically pleasing. I used Twitter and Tumblr to promote it and I got a decent response on Twitter but not so much on Tumblr. On Twitter, I got 10 favorites, 3 retweets and 3 replies and on Tumblr I did not get a response despite utilizing hashtags.

Because I used social media accounts, promotion of my genres was not too entirely hard for me. I frequently use Instagram so I was familiar with the genre conventions and what had to be done in order to gain likes and followers. On Instagram, I utilized hashtags on my photos that relate to my message such as, “#bodypositive,” “#effyourbeautystandards,” and “#loveyourselffirst” among many others. The hashtags seemed to be what really helped to make my pictures gain likes as my posts with more hashtags usually received more likes. I also reposted some pictures and videos from popular body positive accounts which made some of their followers come over to my account. I tried to follow a lot of users from the body positive community and follow their followers and like their pictures so that they would follow me back and like my photos in return. I also found that commenting on other user’s posts made them more likely to follow me back. I promoted my Instagram on my Tumblr page and also posted a link on my twitter to get the account more views. I tried my best to make my Instagram account resemble other real body-positive accounts so I used high-quality photos, filters, and featured well-known people. I posted my first photo on March 28th and tried to post something every day to keep followers from thinking it was an inactive account. I promoted the account throughout April and followed around 150 users and I got about 45 followers in return.

Tumblr was a little trickier than Instagram as I had not used the website in a few years. When designing my Tumblr page, I tried to make it so the viewer would feel happier when looking at it. I used a bright blue and pink flowery background and pink text with a white background so the page would be bright and cheerful and pair with the positive quotes and photos nicely. I also utilized hashtags on Tumblr and used mostly the same ones that were used on Instagram. I followed I lot of body-positive and feminism accounts and then followed the people who they reblog from. I promoted my Tumblr page on my Instagram account and on my Twitter to try and get people from the body-positive Instagram community to follow me on Tumblr as well. I began posting to this account on March 26th and promoted it throughout the month of April and I ended up following about 40 users and only getting 6 followers in return. I found it was harder to spread my Tumblr than it was Instagram because it is harder to connect with people and I don’t know if people search hashtags on Tumblr like people do on Instagram.

Working on this project was a lot more laid back and enjoyable than project #2 since most of the work was already done and I just had to use the information that was found. Project #3 was more challenging than project #2 at times because it wasn’t as straight-forward and I had to use more creativity. For project #2, I had specific tasks that I had to accomplish such as the annotated bibliography and essay that didn’t leave much room for creativity. Sometimes I prefer assignments where I am simply told what to do like with research papers because it is hard for me to initially come up with ideas for projects with more open-ended prompts. For project #2, I had to rely on research and actual studies but for project #3 I had to use my own knowledge of how social media works and what the best methods of promotion would be. The only advice I would give myself for Project #2 would be to find more sources supporting the fact that Instagram can also be a healthy environment as most of the sources supporting that argument were not peer-reviewed.

Potential Genres Proposal

My research paper helped me answer the question of whether Instagram is healthy for young women or not. The majority of the sources claimed that the app is unhealthy because of the focus it puts on appearances but it was also seen that the app can be helpful when you submerge yourself in the right community. For project 3, I am going to create three genres to spread the ideas of body-positivity, the importance of diversity, and self-confidence. I plan to create a Tumblr page which will be full of uplifting quotes and photos that support loving oneself. I will also include research from project 2 to support why these things matter. In order to reach an even larger online population, I am also going to create an Instagram account as this is one of the most popular communities for young women. On this account I will post body positive photos and quotes and share different women that are inspiring and promote self-confidence and acceptance. For my third genre, I am going to create a set of graphics that have quotes about confidence and acceptance along with body positivity activists. I will spread all of these genres on twitter and the two social media accounts will be easy to share using hashtags and by following others in the community. These genres will be successful because social media plays a large role in the lives of many young people and it is very easy for information to spread.

Research Report

I am going to continue to use research from the sources that discuss how Instagram and social media in general affects the body-image of women. I am going to use the article, “Eating Disorders: Perceptions of Young Women and Social Media Portrayal” by Arushi Verma and Maria-Irini Avgoulas because it talks about how certain accounts on Instagram that promote extreme thinness can cause women to question their bodies and develop eating disorders. I am also going to use “Body Conscious” written by K. Schreiber in Psychology Today because she discusses how women can feel confident about their bodies until they start to compare themselves to other women. This relates to my genres because I am going to post body-positive posts about how women shouldn’t compare themselves to others and should just focus on being healthy and happy. I will also use the article “#Instasad?: Exploring associations among Instagram use, depressive symptoms, negative social comparison, and strangers followed” by K. Lup, L. Trub, and L. Rosenthal. This article discusses how depressive symptoms can arise when people compare themselves to people they see on social media. This relates to my genres because social media is often full of celebrities and edited models which can cause women to have unrealistic goals and feel inferior but I will post real unedited women and affirmations that physical appearances should not be the number one concern. I will also take ideas from the article in American Fitness by Cristina Barrera as it states that health comes from the inside and the first step to any lifestyle change is learning to love oneself first.
